Gm,
I'm sorry to kept you all hanging yesterday but the action got too intense for me to keep up. I was multi-tasking. So let me continue and try to offer a synopsis of yesterday's tip off at the swamp. First of all, the heat was unbearable--that's nothing new for those of you who train or have trained there. We like to think of it as the ideal training grounds for our Lady Gators! π
Game 1 was a doozy (is that even a word?) with both teams allowing their stars to shine and role-players impact the game. For Catonsville, Ms. Dickey and Alford paced their team to a 6 point halftime lead. However, it was the 2nd half that saw contributions and big shots made by the entire Cougars' squad. All 8 of yesterday's players scored with Ms. Brooke, Ms. Hallie, and Ms. Haley leading the way to land an impressive 47-41 win in the contest.
Game 2 was scheduled for Howard and South River. There was some miscommunication with Howard be awarded the forfeit. Nonetheless, they featured their talents agains a thrown together Keough team. Howard was impressive with their precision offense, sharp cuts, pinpoint passing and accurate shooting. They passed the ball very well and demonstrated great, team chemistry. And although each player had great moments, it was Ms. Sam and her long range shooting that set the pace. I give credit to my ad hoc Lady Gators team (Syd, KB, Tee, Britt, & Tweety) who battled long and hard with 5 and then 4 players (1 fouled out). You keep the game exciting and interesting. Of course, you had to use all of your timeouts yesterday just to avoid collapsing. You surely put up a valiant effortπͺ only to succumb to a 61-47 final score.
Game 3 featured Mount Hebron versus North County. Howard County will have to look out for incoming energizing freshman PG Ms. Tori who was all over the floor. Her defensive efforts were noticed by us all. Also, Coach Bell has weapons in Ms. Natalie and Ms. Clarke who demonstrated that they can stroke it from outside of the arc. North County stayed in striking distance all game due to the collective efforts Ms. Scott, Ms. L.F, Ms. Biggs, Ms. McQuade, and Ms. C.T.H. Final score favored Mount Hebron 31-18.
Game 4 was probably the featured game of the day. The Blue Angels (high schoolers from an array of basketball programs ranging from Virginia to Pennsylvania coached by the distinguished Phil Straw) took the court against Parkdale. The Angels received notable contributions from several players but it was Ms. Jess Foster who connected on 6 long balls that secured the 47-43 win. For Parkdale, PG-Ms. Briel was fantastic. She was a scoring machine with an "I do not want to lose" heart and mentality that was evident each time she touched the court. Ms. Drew, Ms. Nemo, and Ms. Reagan were solid in their performances as well. I can see why Coach Lawrence is excited about the upcoming season.
Stay tuned for other games....

Okay, it's back to the recap.
Game 5 was a double-header for the Blue Angels. They took on the Falcons from Severna Park. From the audience, it looked as the Blue Angels were still hyped from their earlier win. They came out storming and established an early lead that they never relinquished. The Lady Falcons were able to execute but the rim seemed to have a kid in it. I do take my hat off to the players because they continued to compete until the last buzzer sounded. Ms. Jessica and Ms. Caroline led the team with 4 points respectively. For the Angels, Ms. Jess F tallied a game high 12 points followed by Ms. Kolbi and Ms. Olivia who poured in 9 points a piece.
Game 6 offered another competitive match-up between Overlea and Arundel. This game stayed close throughout. I do not have players names for this game only numbers so I will refrain from the individual accolades. However, at the half, the score was 17-16 with Overlea leading. The 2nd half was similar to the first with a game of runs. The guard play for both teams appeared to take center stage. Arundel received prolific scoring from an incoming freshman and Overlea had contributions from a few of their veterans. In the end, Overlea squeaked out a 30-26 win.
Game 7 saw Mount de Sales impose their will against one of our Lady Gators teams that had limited players. Again, we did not have names but only numbers. Still, I am compelled to applaud the basketball played by Mount de Sales. The shooting was accurate, passing precise, and hustle energetic. All 9 of the Mount players scored with 3 in double-digits. We competed with the available bodies we had but we were out played and outmatched.
Game 8 was a better duel as Reservoir and Old Mill took the hardwood. Old Mill took a commanding lead to the half 23-8 behind the scorning of Ms. McBride, Ms. Smith, and Ms. Galloway. Ms. Emily for Reservoir tried to keep it close but fell short. However, the 2nd half saw a more focused Reservoir team. Ms. Emily, Ms. Nia, and Ms. Kayla made things a bit interesting. However, Ms. Hall would not to go down without a fight. Subsequent field goals by Ms. White proved to be a bit too much of Old Mill. I am obliged to extend kudos to Ms. Parker for the swamp highlights of the day with her acrobat gliding lay ups that ignited the audience!

Game 9- Old Mill (JV) vs. Mount Hebron (JV) was a runnaway contest for Old Mill. Ms. Mallett scored team and game high 18 points to coast the Lady Patriots. Old Mill got contributions from all 9 players on both sides of the ball. Mount Hebron showed some promise; however, in this contest, the intensity and pressure were too overwhelming for the incoming freshman. I am certain that by time the fall concludes and the high school season begins, Coach Broadus will have this squad peaking and prepared for competition.
Game 10 saw River Hill butcher a relatively young Lady Gator team. Names were not provided in this contest but all 8 of the Hawks scored to score a lopsided win. They came out with lots of energy and hustle. They were good in transition and executed their half court sets with timing and acumen. For us, we as a coaching staff were able to observe and assess the heart and hustle of our players. We are excited about our potential.
The final game of the night showcased our Lady Gators' varsity team against the Raiders of Athloton. This game started close with each team exchanging baskets. We had a complement of all of our players compared to a hand full of Raiders. As the game progressed, our depth prove to be a huge advantage as we broke open the tightly contested first half to land a wide margin victory. For the Raiders, Incannot wait to watch them play with their full squad because the few that did compete on Saturday were fierce!πππ
I plan to post Week's 2 schedule no later than Thursday so stay tuned....
