Opening Night had its share of excitement in AA County Girls Basketball!!
Although most games turned out as expected....there was one big upset tonight!! Here are the results:
Old Mill over North County 62-26 - A new Look Lady Patriots took an early lead and never looked back tonight. Working mainly from the outside with play from its back court Old Mill put the pressure on early and caused numerous turnovers preventing the knights from getting into a flow. Douglas lead OM with 16 points and Shaffer lead NC with 10!!
South River over Severna Park 40-35 - Burrows lead SR with 14 points while Fitzwaters contributed 10. Chew put in 10 for SP!
Northeast over Chesapeake 46-42 (Upset) - This was a big win for Northeast as Mackenzie Coburn lead all scorers with 16 points!
Broadneck over Southern 52-49 - Coach Mckinney gets his first County win as McCue scored 15 points for the Bruins!
Meade over Glen Burnie 49-39 - This was an interesting game as Briel Owens picked up 2 fouls in less than 2 minutes to start the game for Meade. She was taken out for a brief moment and returned to lead all scorers with 18 points as the Mustangs beat the Gophers. GB is going to be an interesting team to watch this year. They are young and are clearly trying to get their feet up under them, but they are going to upset some people this year. Meade is very young...and very talented. Sym Brown did not start tonight for the Mustangs, but did get some time as the game went on!
Arundel over Annapolis 65-40 - The Wildcats did justice to Coach Lee Rogers tonight by winning the game where the school court was named after the legendary Coach. Arundel got solid play from Tye Queen early in the game as Heather Middleton went out with an injury early. Queen finished with 13 points and Senior Guard A. Harmons put in 16 points down the stretch. I could not help but compare this Arundel team to some others in recent years and the one thing that stood out to me is the defense. They played team defense and made their foul shots. They went on a 22 point run in the 2nd quarter to break the game open and never looked back. Annapolis looked good, but just did not have the horses to keep up with Arundel. I like the progress I see with the Panthers....they were working a disciplined old school backside pick and roll and were getting to the basket, but the shots just would not fall! My advise to other schools, do not sleep on Annapolis!

I was able to watch three games tonight using the NFHS Network on Demand Feature! This will allow me to see more games during the season and provide you with fresh updates!
