Well Glen Burnies run to the State Finals has ended!! They lost yesterday to Western in the Semifinals 61-46!! It was a great run for the Gophers and my hat is off to them and Coach Porter....21 straight wins is nothing to shake a hat at, but that was a bittersweet ending! There will be a lot of post game analysis of the Western Game, but before the Armchair Generals weigh in, let me give you my honest cold assessment of what I saw take place at Paint Branch yesterday. AA County Girls Bball got slightly exposed!! Now, I know some people are going to say, here we go again, but my reply is yes.....here we go again! Western played the toughest Defense Glen Burnie has faced all year (even tougher than Severna Park) and they balanced that defense with a solid Offensive plan. Some people will say that GB was nervous, to that I will say, there were clearly a little nerves early but the stage was no bigger than that of the County Championship!! We simply cannot overlook the fact that this was the best team they faced all season. Western played defense and had the athletes to give anyone a run!! Western also exposed the real weakness of GB...the frontcourt!! Westerns Big was not great but she was enough and they used her properly! Coit #32 is 6'2"...not as big as the Centers from Meade or NE (Burton and Fox) and and a bit talker than Watts of Old Mill but she had some bball skills...knew her limitations and Western worked the ball in to her early as part of their game plan. The guards for Western were quick and fast, but they made mistakes and had turnovers just like anyone else....the only problem was that there were more of them! Western only had seven (7) total players.....and there were times that they clearly got winded, but whenever Glen Burnie made a run, Western was able to respond! It was clear that Western had (7) players who lived and breathed Basketball....while GB had several who are Bball gym rats, but like most teams in the County GB has some bball second sporters. Which leads me to my point!! Until we make Girls Basketball a primary sport in AA County again, we are always going to exposed when we get to the State Level!! Yes, I beleive in Bballers playing a second sport.....but true Bballers are already looking for a Club team and will be splitting their time accordingly!! Soccer, Lacrosse, Volley Ball and Field Hockey are Sports that draw a lot of female athletes in AA County, we need to put Bball back into the forefront. It starts of course with the County Rec System conducting a legit Spring Basketball League and not considering it an out of season sport. Until we do some of these things the Westerns of the World will continue to eat our lunch at the finals!! But of course I know I am preaching to the choir!! Congratulations Glen Burnie on a Special Season!

Okay, this has been one crazy Season, and I am sure many people are glad that it is over!! Before I do my end of Season Assessment, I think its time to release my All County Teams!! This year I will have "Three" Teams and a Honorable Mention....as well as an "All Freshman Team"!! I am sure some people will have concerns about this and will feel that I have watered down the pool....to the contrary, this reflects the growth that I see in AA County play and I want to do something to motivate that growth. With that being said, Let's go with my All County Freshman Team: # 15 M. Pooh Brown - Old Mill #24 Rae Adams - South River #1 London Best Broadneck #33 Rae Ogle - South River #5 Jessica Gotshall - Arundel #2 Vanessa Carmicheal - CroftonAll of these Players made their Varsity Teams with Brown, Ogle, Carmichael and Adams being major contributors to their Programs. With these (6) Players the future is bright for AA County Basketball!!
